Guide to the New York State Department of Transportation photographic collection for Erie County.

In August of 2011 the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society accepted the photo collection described in this finding aid from the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). The collection consists of a series of photographs and negatives dating from 1932 to 1987, which document various construction projects taken on by the department. In processing the collection, the principles of original order and provenance were adhered to as much as possible. As the records were processed, minor techniques of preservation were employed such as removing paper clips and other metal fasteners. The photographs were processed and transferred to alkaline and lignin-free boxes and folders. Duplicates were merged into Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society's general subject collection. The collection is organized according the following geographical subgroups: (1) northern Erie County, (2) southern Erie County and (3) the City of Buffalo. In addition, one record series was identified consisting of the photographs and negatives depicting the construction work carried out in each local government. The records series in this guide are arranged geographically. Each record series description includes information on the record's creator, series title and dates, the physical characteristics of the documents, the historical and background information relating to the documents, and information contained in the records series.
